Learn the secret of customer advocacy
Every 5 seconds someone recommends First Direct, while1 in 3 customers join the bank because of personal recommendations.
PeterSimpson, Head of Customer Propositions and Marketing at HSBC, will sharethe secrets to unlocking the power of customer advocacy in his keynote at Customer: Strategy & Management, 22 June 2006, 12:15-13:00, NEC Birmingham.
Peter Simpsons presentation: Creating Customer Advocators- values drivenmarketing will discuss factors that have made First Direct one of the mostadvocated brands in the UK and how they have sustained their reputation forservice excellence.
Success in customer advocacy depends on being substantially better thanthe competition; it is no good being a bit different. Neither is it helpful to pursue policies customers dont want, explains Peter Simpson.
What isrequired is a leadership belief system, a real focus on informationexchange and a true respect for people. The first direct model has put these three together for nearly 20 years tocreate a superior customer experience and customer loyalty which is quite extraordinary.
The model, as we have seen, holds good in a multi channel,on-line world. The passion for excellence is not unique there are otherbrands in the same frame of mind.
What all these brands share and lesssuccessful ones do not, is a realisation that treating people fairly is nota constraint but the ultimate competitive advantage. Simpson will discusshow other organisations can enjoy the same success by adopting a similarmodel of customer management.

Kamala Sarup write on the human cost of the Maoist war in Nepal
15,000 people Died in Maoists war, says Kamala Sarup: "The conflicts spanning over 10 years have claimed the lives of 15,000 people and 500 children in Nepal. About 10 percent of the total population of Nepal had been disabled in the past decade of violence.
"Hundreds of women were raped while many were subjected to forced sex and violence in the past decade.(IHRCN) said.
"Small arms have become a major challenge to the Nepali government after it resumed talks with the guerrillas. The state should implement the existing laws and rules effectively and must also make other relevant laws if deemed necessary in order to control and minimize the use and misuse of all kinds of small arms in the country," Bishnu Raj Upreti added. However, in the Maoists war, it showed how children and people were being killed and wounded.
Nepalese are really surprised and shocked in the war. In the past couple of weeks, the Maoists have resorted to mass abductions, particularly of young children.Thousands of people in Nepal have lost their sense of security and thousands face an indefinite period of uncertainty and anxiety.
The insurgency has affected lives in almost all of the 75 districts of the country. Most of the political parties, including the Maoist party, are using educational institutions as their playgrounds for politics.
Most intelligent students are being used and their future is being destroyed. Politicians have never talked about the basic problems faced by Nepalese students: higher education, employment opportunities and scholarships.
The majority of children in Nepal have grown up against a permanent conflict background. Many of those who are six or seven-years old have grown up with shootings, explosions, deaths. Children who manage to survive are likely to be more seriously injured.
As a result of armed conflict, at least 500 children have been killed. While the government has not made any efforts to take care of the special needs of children caught in the conflict. The situation has worsened in recent years because conflicts have grown more prominent. The war-affected children have no opportunity for education.
Many are homeless, forced to flee because of acute poverty. The number of children who have been killed remains unknown. Children are affected by warfare in many ways, but one of the most alarming trends is their participation as guerillas.
Thousands of children die each year as a direct result of armed violence from knives, and bullets. Many of these are forcibly recruited, seized from schools. Others are driven to join armed groups by fear or poverty.
In Nepal where children are already vulnerable to malnutrition and disease, the onset of armed conflict has increase death rates. Continuing war in Nepal brings more casualties with each day. Political unrest and insurgency have forced several children into hazardous work in Nepal. Many have also been pushed to work as labor in Indian homes and factories.
Our attention also to the failure of systems of traditional values that, have always prevailed in the defense of the children. Ultimately, displaced children and their families need to return home.
They need special protection and care. All emergency assistance should specifically address the health needs of children. Trafficking in small arms and light weapons, which often provokes and always sustains conflicts, must be brought under control.
There can no longer be any excuses, no acceptable argument for arming children. The recruitment and use in hostilities of children under the age of 15 by any armed force or armed group, as a war crime.
Crime against children is unacceptable. We Nepali are urging armed groups to end the recruitment of children under 18. The deployment of child is a despicable and damaging practice that must end. Civil society should condemn the involvement of children in armed conflict, particularly their mobilization by armed groups.
Government and the civil society have to act to stop or minimize the suffering of children in armed conflict. Will Nepal government be able to prevent the outbreak of fighting, by addressing the socio-economic roots of conflict? Copyright Kamala Sarup.

"Trans-Atlantic" art installation is a first
From Saturday 5th June 2006 until Saturday 1st July, 25-year-old Lia Ditton, a professional female sailor and graduating student of Chelsea College of Art & Design, will stage a live 24/7 interactive art installation called "Absolute Solitude, 1 woman, 1 boat", where she will live for 28 days non-stop in a 40ft by 28ft wide racing Trimaran suspended in inner-city London.
The work will be a static re-enactment of the single-handed trans-Atlantic journey Ditton undertook in 2005. "Absolute Solitude" is about the relationship which develops between the skipper and her boat and will replicate on land the drama of Ditton's trans-Atlantic odyssey. Visitors will be invited to climb to a viewing platform and view the boat's 10ft by 6ft cabin and encouraged to interact with Ditton, who will follow the same 24-hour sleep pattern as if racing.
A celebrated yachtswoman and artist, Ditton entered the 2005 Faraday Mill OSTAR, her first solo Trans-Atlantic Yacht race, in order to live the subject of her art and combine her two passions art and sailing.
Out of 43 entrants where only 18 finished, she completed 5th in class overall and was not only the youngest competitor but the only woman to finish, in the smallest trimaran of the fleet.
Leaving Plymouth, Devon, for Newport, Rhode Island, Lia relayed experiences of her trans-Atlantic journey to her shore crew via a satellite phone. This time using the internet, the exhibition itself is trans-Atlantic, as visitors to Galerie Emourlot in New York will be able converse with Lia during the course of the installation using a unique new voice over IP (VoIP) Siemens Dual Dect C450 phone, which will be fitted onboard the boat, having been launched in the UK on 5th June by the installation's sponsor ProVu.
Using voice over the internet incurs no call charges and with ProVu's new phone, aimed primarily at the home and small business market, a PC is not required. It can be linked to a standard telephone line and a broadband modem meaning that simultaneous standard and VoIP calls can be made. Commenting on the interactive art installation Lia Ditton said, "Inspired by the great William Turner, who tied himself to the rail of a ship in the throe of a storm to experience the subject of his painting, I wanted to communicate my experience by entering the Faraday Mill OSTAR last year to research the subject of my art. I'm hoping "Absolute Solitude" will allow visitors to experience the excitement of crossing the Atlantic.
Similar to Ellen McArthur's B&Q Trimaran, Ditton's boat will be craned from the Thames and transported to the Tate Britain on Sunday 4th June, where the boat will be mounted in the Courtyard of Chelsea College.
On an angled frame, as if the boat is surging down a huge wave, Ditton will live onboard for the same length of time as it took her to race across the Atlantic alone, up to 28 days. As the weather changes, the sails will be hoisted or doused and appropriately trimmed to the conditions.
The purpose this time is not to race faster, but to reduce the wind resistance of the anchored yacht. About Lia Ditton Lia Ditton, 26, has made two solo crossings of the Atlantic during the last twelve months.
In the single-handed Faraday Mill OSTAR 2005 trans-Atlantic race, Lia was the youngest competitor and only woman to finish.

Latest Health mailing from consumer advocate Tim Bolen
I have TWO interesting stories for you today:
(1) The "Cal Streeter" Story Opinion by Consumer Advocate Tim Bolen Tuesday, May 30th, 2006
I'm about to tell you about one of the most important cases in US healthcare - a turning point - the prosecution of a Northwestern Indiana cutting-edge Doctor of Osteopathy, Wilbert C. (Cal) Streeter.
Although few have ever heard of the Streeter case, because of its result, make it a landmark. The case began, roughly, in 1996, as the result of certain pressures put on the government by the nefarious "quackbuster" operation, and it is still going on - but has taken an entirely different, and interesting turn.
It was THE CASE, I believe, that was supposed to be the "model case" to be used against all "Alternative Medicine" practitioners nationwide. But since the case pretty much died on the vine, so to speak, the "model" was dropped, and although the tactic was used in a few places - it wasn't continued.
This is probably the very first case where the credibility of the "quackbuster" operation was questioned at the Federal Prosecutor level - and found wanting. The entire case against Streeter was based upon the premises about health care put forward by the "quackbuster" operation at the Federation of States Medical Boards (FSMB) annual meeting in Chicago in 1996.
There, a major program was presented. It was, supposedly, on "Health Fraud," and how to combat it. But really, it was an attempt to deflect the Federal government's interest AWAY from then Attorney General Janet Reno's definition of "Health Fraud," as "Over billing, false coding, MD kickbacks, etc," and push it towards a different focus - "Alternative Medicine."
That plan, put forward at the Chicago FSMB meeting is called the "Plan of '96" and although it caused some damage, in the end it failed. I'll tell you about the actual plan, and who operated it, and where it stands today, in a minute.
I believe that the Streeter case was the FIRST time the tactic, presented in Chicago, was used. And, there were victims. One of the first "victims" of the "Plan of '96" was a large patient group in Northern Indiana, an area that included the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.
About 10,000 patients of Cal Streeter DO were one day suddenly deprived of the cutting-edge services of their physician - and they've suffered for it ever since. They are still angry about it - and have decided to do something about it - ten years later. In short - they want Cal Streeter DO back in practice, and they are getting their way, whether those that want him out of practice like it or not.
And, they'll probably be targeting, by various means, those that caused their loss of Streeter's services. It's going to be an interesting battle. To read the entire article, and access the interesting links, click on the URL below:http://www.bolenreport.net

MINISTER CHALLENGES INDUSTRY - FOR HOME BUYERS AND SELLERS
Property businesses are being encouraged to sign up to take part in a dry run for Home Information Packs to speed up the benefits for consumers - Housing Minister Yvette Cooper said today.
The Minister warned that some estate agents and other professionals were in danger of being left behind as innovative organisations take the lead in transforming home buying and selling to provide a better service for consumers.
Yvette Cooper said,"Over 150 organisations have said they are interested in joining the next stage of the dry run this autumn and 49 have already signed up. It's an invaluable opportunity to test and improve the service they can offer to consumers.
"The level of positive interest and involvement we are receiving so early on in the HIP initiative should worry those who are dragging their feet. Miss this moment and they risk being left behind by a fast changing market"
HIPs - which are being introduced 1 June 2007 - have been designed by the government to cut waste and costs for buyers and sellers which currently adds up to £1m a day. They will:
* Ensure first time buyers, struggling to get their first foot on the property ladder, get HIPs for free
* Cut waste and duplication by preventing several prospective buyers paying again for the same searches and surveys when sales fall through.
* Provide quality reliable information at the beginning of the process and cut failed transactions which currently waste £350m each year.
* Include energy performance information in the Home Condition Reports, preventing the need for a stand alone survey.
The cost of a HIP will be set by the market - not Government. Adding up what the market is currently charging for existing products similar to the components of a pack suggests a cost of around £600-700 plus VAT but market watchers are predicting that costs will be driven down by competition.
Ms Cooper said: "Competition will have a big impact on the market - ASDA, for example have just announced they are entering the estate agency market and their offer includes a free Pack.
"As we move towards the dry run, consumers will demand competitive offers from their suppliers - industry must rise to this challenge."
The programme also offers new career opportunities with a Diploma in Home Inspection, Currently 4,400 people are in training, many of whom are surveyors adding the qualification to their existing portfolios.
The length of training required depends on previous experiences but the average existing surveyor can be trained in around 5 days plus the time taken to assemble a portfolio of work. A Government report published today, shows that between 5,000 and 7,400 Home Inspectors are needed by 1 June 2007.
Details of the contents of Home Information Packs will be placed before Parliament as secondary legislation in June 2006 and an assessment, showing the impact of this new legislation will be published alongside.
About Home Information Packs As from 1 June 2007, homeowners will be required to provide a Home Information Pack when marketing their homes for sale throughout England and Wales. This will help reduce the estimated £1 million which is wasted each day because of failed transactions.
The Pack will include a Home Condition Report, terms of sale and any search details. An energy effiency rating will be included in the report, giving consumers the choice to assess the likely running costs of a property before they buy.
1. Consumer Benefits :Provide transaction improvements by reducing the abortive costs to consumers and the industry attributable to failures caused by survey or valuation inspection findings.
Improve the condition of the housing stock by reducting the incidence of unexpected repair bills and encouraging better maintenance of homes.
Provide greater consumer choice by reducing the entry costs to first time buyers and creating a market of serious sellers.
2. Cost of Home Information Packs: The Packs will cost around £600-700 plus VAT. Most of this cost is not new and is being met at present by both sellers and buyers.
The Home Condition Report has been developed in consultation with industry, including lenders, so that they can use the information contained in it to inform their valuations. This will mean fewer separate on site valuations inspections and reduce costs for consumers.
The proposed content of the pack includes searches and other information which is currently paid for by the buyer. Where several buyers pursue the same property, then these costs are repeated by each buyer. Under the new arrangements all prospective buyers will be able to access this information up front as supplied by the seller.
3. Market Impact: Home Information Packs will make the market more efficient and certain. They will make home buying more affordable and sustainable for first time buyers, who will receive full details abiout the property at no cost to them.
Major players are now investing heavily in Home Information Pack systems and intend to market these well in advance of packs becoming mandatory. This means sellers and buyers will not have to wait until June 2007 before they can benefit from packs immediately before implementation of the mandatory scheme in June.
Industry accepts that sellers will generally not pay up front for Home Information Packs. Thus there is no impediment to sellers marketing their homes with the Packs both before and after implementation.
4. Home Inspectors/Certification Scheme: Only inspectors qualifying under certification schemes approved by the Secretary of State will be able to prepare Home Condition Reports. The scheme will be responsible for monitoring and auditing inspectors' work. This will be robust to ensure that standards are maintained and the reports can be trusted.
If inspectors fail to maintain the correct standard or act in a way that is partial to one party contrary to the rules of the scheme, their certification will be removed, along with that their ability to produce Home Condition Reports.
5. Home Condition Report: The Home Condition Report will be an objective report on the condition of the property that buyers, sellers and lenders will have a legal right to rely on. Home Inspectors will have to have suitable insurance that will be backed up by insurance of last resort provided by the certification scheme.
6. Integrated Government Policy BenefitsHome Information Packs support the Government's wider reform agenda, including raising the energy efficiency of the housing stock, and improving its state of repair, as well as contributing to sustainable home ownership and communities.

Party Walls. This is where you can you can get free expert advice
People who live in semi-detached or terraced houses will have what is known as a party wall. That#s a wall that you share with your neighbour. Party walls seperate buildings that belong to different owners.

Building extensions; work on damp proofing, internal refurbishment works and sructural alterations. There may be other circumstances when work requires agreement with a neighbour.
since the inotrduction of the Party Wall Act of 1996, homeowners in England and Wales must follow set procedures when they want to undertake the abvoe types of work. The purpose of the law is to make certain that disputes do not arise as a result of such works. Major jobs require the written consen of the adjoining property owner.
Under the act there is a provision for apointing a surveyor or suveyors who will act impartially to ensure that disputes are dealt with fairly.

Keep a piece of Wales with you, no matter where you are!
MobileFfon.com (www.mobileffon.com) was created after the founder, Russell Davies traveled overseas and discovered just how many people with Welsh blood there are outside Wales but how few reminders of home there were.
Explains Russell: "As I visited places like South Africa, USA and Australia I kept meeting people who had strong links with Wales and they all said how much they miss home and how passionate they are about showing their roots.
"The one thing that is evident is that there is very little Welsh merchandise that you can buy outside Wales apart from the obligatory Welsh rugby or soccer shirt," he continued.
With the number of mobile phone owners reaching 80% of the population in those countries, realised that a Web site could offer Welsh mobile phone content to the huge number of Welsh ex-pats.
That is where the idea for MobileFfon.com came from. The content available from Mobileffon.com includes ring tones, wallpapers, and animations, with much more content to be added in the near future. Much of the content is official licenced material from organisations such as The Welsh Rugby Players Association.
Now, ex-pat mobile phone owners can carry a picture of home or their favorite Welsh sporting hero with them, or just display their Welshness with the Welsh flag or the flag of St. David.Mobileffon.com (www.mobileffon.com) is sure to be a hit with mobile phone owners home and abroad as, whatever your roots, Wales has a special place in your heart, and now also on your phone.

How an ancient Chinese system can help YOUR golf
Golf pros agree. Golf is a mental game and thus distracting, negative thoughts can quickly undermine a perfect swing.
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an emerging do-it-yourself acupressure technique that quickly resolves negative thinking and relaxes the body’s subtle energy system. This results in a more natural approach to the game and often brings dramatically lowered scores. The basics can be learned via the free download of the EFT Manual. http://www.emofree.com/downloadeftmanual.asp?ref=prw-golf Sport Psychologist, Dr. Nick Holt, studied elite golfers’ performance stress and coping strategies. “Common stressors for players included worries about scores, missing putts, making mistakes, using the wrong club, being watched and opponent performance.”
According to Holt, players like Tiger Woods are able to cope with stress very well but many players don’t even try to cope, or know how to cope. Gary Craig, the Stanford-trained engineer who developed EFT explains, “EFT is a coping strategy that is invaluable to golfers. Anyone can use it to eliminate performance related worries; even the most persistent ones.
"It is also useful for golfers whose confidence is undermined when competing against “better” players.”
He adds: “Most experienced golfers know how to technically make perfect shots but few golfers can execute those kinds of shot with consistency. When consistency enters the picture, major improvements are possible. Many golfers have used EFT to drop their scores from the mid-80’s to the mid-70’s. Pros are also using it to shave that all important 1 or 2 strokes off of important rounds.”
Dr. Holt observed that the elite golfers in his study were not aware of the importance of effectively coping with stress. They focused on developing their technical skills, but didn’t have effective coping strategies.
“Golfers at every level need to be proactive about forming and then practicing strategies for effectively coping with stress,” Holt says.Sports performance specialists like Steve Wells in Australia use EFT to help athletes diminish intrusive thoughts, build motivation and confidence, and ultimately improve their scores.
Wells worked with an amateur golfer who wanted to become a pro. They did EFT for some of the typical golf worries mentioned earlier, but his golf performance changed only slightly. It was only when they began working on fears that his golf game shifted remarkably. Wells’ client was harboring many fears about taking the risk of turning pro.
Every time he played golf, his fear of success and his fear of failure inhibited his game. When these issues were addressed with EFT, he was posting incredible scores and beating players that outranked him.
He was no longer bringing his fears with him into his game.Several EFT practitioners have reported working with golfers on the driving range. They hit several balls with different clubs and rated each shot.
Then they spent a few minutes doing a very basic application of EFT. They took another series of shots and in about 80% of the cases, there was significant improvement in distance and accuracy of their drives.Craig explains, “In my experience working with golfers and other athletes, most people play within a “comfort zone”.
That is, at a subtle level, they feel they "belong" in the mid-80's or low 90's … they say they can’t “break into” the 70’s. But, after just one EFT session, 80% of them hit a new level in their game. I don’t know of any other technique that targets this tendency and has this level of success.”
EFT is a do-it-yourself acupressure technique that golfers can do during a game, just before a particularly difficult hole.
By simply tapping on a few acupuncture points on the face and torso, they can correct their anxiety about their next shot. It only takes a couple of minutes and won’t hold up the game.
There are EFT practitioners in most countries, especially the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South America. Many are licensed health care practitioners. The EFT website is now the sixth most actively visited natural health site in the world.Over 300,000 have downloaded Craig’s free training manual and another 10,000 download it each month. The official EFT Manual has been translated by volunteer practitioners into nine languages.
The EFT Manual explains the basics so that anyone can begin applying EFT right away. It can be freely downloaded athttp://www.emofree.com/downloadeftmanual.asp?ref=prw-golf

Searching for the Cure. Prescription for madness
In the Autumn of 2004, a Food and Drug Administration panel addressed the risks of anti-depressants prescribed to children and teenagers who show high symptoms of depression, and they found that antidepressants not only cause some children and teenagers to become suicidal but most have also failed to cure their depression.
Joy Hancock confronts this harsh reality of a generation that relies on prescription drugs to cure the ills of their depressed children, telling about the emotional turmoil that has wrenched her family as a result of pharmaceutical dependence.
In Prescription for Madness, Hancock reveals the dynamic story of her oldest son, Christopher, who was diagnosed with a mental illness at the age of 16. After six months using anti-depressant and anti-psychotic medications, Christopher spiraled into episodes of violence, became increasingly suicidal and was eventually committed to psychiatric hospitals.
His loving mother, frustrated with the results, struggled to find her son a mental shelter. Hancock shares the tumultuous details of a family caught in the grips of a medicated society, fighting to meet the needs of a loved one and tame the uncontrollable depression that has altered their lives.
As a mother of two teenagers, Hancock tells her story with passion and care to inform other families who medicate their children. She hopes to elucidate those parents who have been to doctors searching for a treatment that will make their children normal and happy. Hancock, through the power of her narrative, warns other parents about the dangers of misdiagnosis, and reveals the risks of relying on anti-depressants to treat an already volatile condition.

Cash seized by Revenue and Customs investigators
Over £800,000 in cash was seized and seven people arrested in a coordinated series of anti-money laundering operations by officers from HM Revenue & Customs. The seizures follow surveillance operations throughout London.
On Tuesday 23 May, two suspects were arrested in Walthamstow, with approximately £300,000 in a holdall and £50,000 concealed in a spare tyre in the boot of their hire car. They have been charged with money laundering offences under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. They have been remanded in custody to appear again at City of London Magistrates Court on 2 June.
On Wednesday 24 May, two suspects were arrested in Colindale, North London, and approximately £150,000 in cash found in a holdall in the BMW they were driving. One suspect has been charged with money laundering offences under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002; he has been released on conditional bail to reappear in court on 21 July. The other has been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.
A further three people were arrested at a hotel by Junction 16 of the M1 and approximately £300,000 in cash seized. All three suspects have been charged with money laundering offences under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. They were due to appear before Bow Street Magistrates Court on Saturday 27 May.
Kevin Davis, Assistant Chief Investigation Officer for HMRC said: "HMRC is committed to using the full powers of the Proceeds of Crime Act in order to take the profits out of crime. The majority of crime is motivated by financial gain: by rigorously tackling financial crime and seizing criminal assets we are contributing to a safer society and preventing criminals from living lavish lifestyles built on illicit activities."
Investigations are ongoing.

New organic food website tells it like it is
Fed up with the jumble of hype surrounding organic food and whether it is good for you or not, Virginia Louise has created an information site that gives the visitor very detailed information on the subject to enable people to form a clear opinion.
The web site can be found at http://www.organicfoodinfo.com/ and as well as explaining the advantages of organic food the site also details the arguments for and against organic and GM foods, common myths surrounding organic food and how consumers can be assured that they are purchasing 100% organically grown products.
The web site also has sections that explain how organic farming is carried out and details how pesticides get into your food through traditional growing methods and how farmers achieve much lower levels of heavy metal contamination in organic food.
In addition, there are also sections that explore the possibilities of organic baby food, organic pet food and the advantages of organic skin care treatments.
To encourage visitors to sample the delights of organic cooking Virginia has created seven organic recipes which visitors can download for free. These detail some nutritious and delicious recipes that are intended to show how easy it is to create great tasting meals with organic food.
Virginia has created lists on the site of suppliers where people can obtain organically grown food. Virginia hopes that this list and the free recipes will grow by visitors adding their own particular favorites to them.In this way the site will be growing naturally and in time will become a leading resource for people wanting to obtain knowledge about the advantages of organic food.
Virginia Louise has been cooking and eating organically for several years now and the addition to the family of two children has encouraged her to ensure they get only the best quality food.Virginia can be contacted through the web site.

Neighbours From Hell In Britain publishes special report on abusive neighbours
NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE USE
Issued on behalf of the Neighbours From Hell In Britain by AFJ Media Services
A recent survey undertaken of members of the Neighbours From Hell In Britain (NFHIB) organisation, shows noisy neighbours as being the main source of Neighbours From Hell abuse.
A spokesman for NFHIB said: “It’s 21.82%. There are a lot of people who ignore their neighbours legal right to enjoy a peaceful, quiet life. There are some Neighbours From Hell (NFH) who deliberately target neighbours with noise in order to harass or intimidate them.
“It’s hard for normal people to believe this, but, here at NFHIB, we have plenty of evidence gathered from our 10,000 plus members that this is what happens in many cases.”
Causes of problems for neighbours were identified as being:-
Noise (21.82%)
Anti-Social Behaviour (14.30%)
Harassment(9.75%)
Animal Disturbance (2.97%)
Boundary Problems (4.27%)
Car Parking Issues (or other vehicle problems) (4.27%)
Children/Young People Problems (4.09%)
Bullying (3.81%)
“Other” problems(2.88%)
Rights of Way Issue (or shared access problem)(2.41%)
General Garden related issue(0.84%)
High Hedge Problem (Leylandii, etc)(0.84%)
Rubbish/Litter(0.84%)
Racism or other Hate Crime(0.46%)
General Crime(0.19%)
The spokesman added: “Some deliberate NFH use a variety of methods to harass their neighbours. There have been cases of people playing loud music in the middle of the night, banging on walls, using power tools in the early hours of the morning, deliberately blocking access to neighbouring properties, and so forth. Sadly, with some NFH there’s no limit to what they will do, even sometimes to the extent of damaging property or using violence.”
Some victims of NFH call in the police to help them deal with the illegal behaviour of their neighbours. With mixed results.
When asked “Thinking about the neighbour from hell problem you've experienced, did you find the Police helpful?”, results were:
Yes, they were very helpful and sympathetic (9.56%)
They were somewhat helpful (17.27%)
The Police didn't believe me/didn't want to know (10.86%)
The Police told me it was a 'civil matter' and wouldn't help (17.27%)
They made it worse (4.46%)
I didn't use the Police at all (39.09%)
“We at the NFHIB find it worrying that the majority of police officers seemed unable, or worryingly, unwilling to help victims of abusive and illegal behaviour from neighbours. Or that they even inflamed a situation in some cases, instead of helping to solve the problem.”
He went on to say: “The way police look at so-called ‘neighbour disputes’ is 20 to 30 years behind how they now perceive domestic violence, as a serious problem. NFHIB believe it is a serious error of judgment to label the anti-social and abusive behaviour of Neighbours From Hell as a ‘neighbourhood dispute.’ The deliberate targeting of a neighbour for abusive behaviour and illegal harassment is not what a reasonable person would call a ‘neighbourhood dispute’. Some police forces do realise how serious the problem is, but unfortunately, others lag years behind their more enlightened counterparts.”
The location of Neighbours From Hell might give pause for thought. The survey showed that the majority of Neighbours From Hell activity took place in private housing:
Owner Occupied (75.77%)
Council Property (9.66%)
Housing Association (8.08%)
Private Landlord (5.66%)
Living with Family/Friends/Shared Housing (0.84%)
“There are a number of possible explanations as to why such a large majority of NFH problems occur in owner-occupied housing. We do not feel able to speculate, but point out this means many local authorities might be forced to radically re-think how they deal with the problems of NFH in their patch.”
Tony Blair’s Respect Agenda was seen as not being very helpful. Indeed, almost 40% of respondents didn’t believe it would make any difference.(39.18%)
And 94.43% of people reported having had their ‘stress levels’ increased by the actions of their NFH. “This just shows what a serious problems Neighbours from Hell are in today’s society,” commented the spokesman. “It is a problem that needs to be seriously addressed by those in authority.”
END
EDITORIAL NOTES:

Opinion piece on US dentistry by Tim Bolen
2006 Biggest Health Threat to the United States - US Dentistry...
Opinion by Health Freedom Advocate Tim Bolen
Monday, May 22nd, 2006
The US Health Care System, rated 72nd in quality, but number one in cost - worldwide, is known, by government reports, to be the NUMBER ONE KILLER of Americans - ahead of heart disease, cancer, and strokes. There is no argument against facts.
But what is up for speculation are the REASONS why this is so. No one I know of (government agencies, think tanks, etc.) has taken the time to describe, and rate, the reasons why US citizens are being so short-changed. MORE

Tom Hanks helps MacMillans Cancer Support
Last September, the IKEA store in Edinburgh invited Tom Hanks to their coffee morning, as part of Macmillan Cancer Support's World's Biggest Coffee Morning event, as he was filming the Da Vinci Code at nearby Rosslyn Chapel. Unable to attend himself, he kindly sent his bodyguard with not only apologies, but a signed personal copy of the book which had been used on set as his guide!
There is even a letter of authenticity with the book. "So obviously," said a spokeswoman, "we are auctioning the signed book, and every penny of the proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support. The book is available on eBay right now, and is on there for 1 week only. "
Visit www.ebay.co.uk and type in "Signed copy of Da Vinci Code".

Two weeks to save Britsh man from wrongful execution
A British citizen will be put to death in two weeks for a murder that he was acquitted of - unless Britons put pressure on the Pakistani government to release him, Syed Kamall, Conservative MEP for London, sai.
Mirza Tahir Hussain is to be hanged at dawn on his 36th birthday (June 1st). He was 18 years old when he sought a taxi ride from Rawalpindi to Bhubar in Pakistan. A driver who agreed to take Mr Hussain tried to physically and sexually assault him.
When the driver took out a pistol, there was a scuffle and the driver was shot. Mr Hussain drove the vehicle straight to the nearest police station to report the incident. He was charged and convicted of murder but successive appeals showed there were serious flaws in the evidence presented against the former British territorial Army soldier, and his conviction was quashed.
But, not content with the verdict, the victim's family pressurised the authorities to try him again - this time in the Sharia court. That court convicted Mr Hussain of murder, despite a lack of forensic or pathological evidence and conflicting eyewitness accounts.
One of the judges issued a 60-page 'dissenting opinion' which described Mr Hussain's reconviction as a "miscarriage of justice." Dr Kamall is urging all London residents to write to the Pakistani High Commissioner in London, Dr Maleeha Lodhi, requesting she intercede.
He said: "This execution must not be allowed to take place. We need a huge public outcry from the public to encourage the Pakistanis to back down. "The more we look into the facts behind the trial, the more we can see that a huge miscarriage of justice has occurred. Unfortunately, the Pakistani government is quite prepared to execute an innocent man.
"I am doing what I can to prevent this huge travesty but I do not exaggerate my influence as an MEP. The only way this innocent British man will be released is if the public and the press express their outrage to the Pakistani government."
The Pakistani High Commissioner in London can be reached at: Dr Maleeha Lodhi, High Commissioner for Pakistan, Pakistan High Commission, 34-36 Lowndes square, London SW1X 9JN. Fax: 0207 664 9224.

Barlcays to help small business owners
Barclays has developed a new seminar to help small business owners boost their profit. The bank will be running a programme of free seminars: Let’s Talk More Profit and Let’s Talk Bright Marketing from May 23rd.
New research from Barclays shows that 80% of small business owners want to spend up to a third of their working day developing their business, specifically on areas such as marketing and profit making strategies.
Currently a third of owners spend less than five per cent of their time on these types of activities. The need to improve their bottom line is essential for any business and attendees of the seminar will look at various profit-making strategies and develop individual action plans to help them put their tactics into action.
John Davis, marketing director for local business at Barclays says, "This seminar will help small businesses reap serious short and long-term rewards. Our research shows that eight in 10 small business owners want to dedicate more time to developing the business; this seminar will certainly help delegates to do exactly that and focus on building a successful and profitable business."
The seminar has been developed by Barclays and is being delivered by a leading management consultant Robert Craven, author of 'Kick-start Your Business' and 'Customer is King' who has been referred as 'the entrepreneurship guru' by the Financial Times.
He is also managing director of The Directors' Centre, has run his own restaurant, sound recording studio and training company and spent five years running training and consultancy courses for entrepreneurial businesses at Warwick Business School. Robert Craven, who will be delivering the workshops, says "The workshops are a brilliant opportunity to step back, think about what you are trying to do and start to make decisions that will fundamentally improve the profitability of your business. These events are lively, interactive and, believe it or not, great fun to attend!" For small businesses interested in the seminars, they should call 0800 515 462 to book a place or visit the Barclays WebPages; Let’s Talk More Profit and Let’s Talk Bright Marketing.

Ausies make short work of giant tank cleaning with R-Jet
Cleaning the inside of giant storage tanks at refineries and bulk chemical storage facilities is set to get a lot easier, safer and cheaper, with the development of an innovative jet cleaning device.
The patented R-jet device is placed inside the tank where it generates a high-velocity rotational jet which re-suspends sediment, and keeps solids suspended so they can’t settle and create the tough layer of sludge that currently has to be removed manually.
This typically involves workers using water cannons, shovels or even mini-bulldozers and can mean a tank being offline for several months. Regulations require tanks, which can measure more than 60 metres in diameter, to be regularly inspected – meaning regular cleaning.
The Australian-developed R-jet is considered a breakthrough for the petro-chemical industry, and one that should save millions of dollars, and people’s lives. The device was invented by scientists at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). Dr Jie Wu, who led the team that developed the R-jet device, says the idea of an automated device arose when researchers were helping Exxon Mobil to help decommission its Adelaide (Australia) refinery a couple of years ago.
“We came up with the idea of a high velocity rotating jet located in the tank for suspending and mixing and cleaning operations so people don’t have to do it manually,” says Dr Wu. He says that in the Australian industry alone, manual cleaning costs millions of dollars a year in downtime, labour and direct capital costs.
Dr Wu points out that the development of the R-jet also mitigates the risk to workers who have to do the actual cleaning. “At the moment people are still doing it manually in lots of refineries – they have to go into the tank and physically remove the sludge,” he says. “They are working in an environment where the vapour can explode.”
The dangers of manual cleaning were tragically illustrated in Japan several years ago when four workers at a refinery in Nagoya were killed in an explosion that happened while they were cleaning a tank. Dr Wu says the R-jet technology can either be permanently installed in a tank to prevent build up of sludge, or installed on a temporary basis.
The R-jet was recently tested in an Australian refinery by Paul White who runs Innobiz Solutions, a South Australian-based consultancy that works with the petroleum and alternative fuels industries. Mr White says two tanks were cleaned; the first as a demonstration trial and the second under a commercial agreement with the oil company.
Both operations were successful. “It’s a low-cost alternative that can be justified on safety grounds and economic grounds,” he says. “You get the tank back into service faster and at a lower cost but most importantly without placing workers in hazardous environments.” Mr White believes the R-Jet technology will be attractive to the oil industry, and other bulk liquid industries, world-wide.

Channel 4 Big Brother. Have they gone plumb crazy?
Plumbworld, the UK's largest independent online bathroom retailer is supplying a range of bathroom accessories for series 7 of Big Brother which went live on air this week.
Channel 4's Big Brother recently contacted plumbworld and asked for help in supplying a number of items to the Big Brother house. James Hickman - MD said: “To be associated with the Big Brother series is a real coup for an independent online retailer like us. We are all big fans of the show and of course we were more than happy to help out”.
As you would expect, Big Brother is not giving away too much information, but we can reveal that a number of bathroom accessories were sent to the house but will not be seen on the show for approximately a week!
“Speculation in the office is rife, the fact that the items were ordered so late and won't be seen for another week seems to rule out the possibility that they will simply be used in the Big Brother bathroom.
"Everyone at Plumbworld is hoping that they will appear as part of one of the tasks for the housemates. The truth is we have no idea why Big Brother wants our bathroom accessories at this late stage !”
Big Brother is the UK's biggest reality TV show and is one of the most popular and talked-about shows in British TV history. Big Brother takes place entirely within the confines of the Big Brother House. It's essentially a competition between the housemates, the object of which is to be the last remaining housemate in the House.
At least one housemate will leave the House every week by a process of nomination and public eviction. Housemates will nominate each other for eviction and those with the most votes from their peers face a public vote.
The housemate that receives most public votes leaves the House and is out of the competition. Plumbworld is the UK's largest independent online retailer of bathroom products. Established in 1999 by James & Anita Hickman, Plumbworld is based in Evesham, Worcestershire with a staff of 35 at their 20,000sqm warehouse.

Wrong song for England fans?
“We can’t sing along with Embrace, this June – What are we fans to do?” A sentiment felt by true England fans all around the UK.
The official England World Cup song has been slated by football and music fans alike for lacking passion and the all important ‘C’ factor – ‘Chantability’.
The Fans have done something about it and a new recording ‘We Are The Fans’ will give the ever loyal crowds something much better to cheer (and sing) about. The sure to be hit is available as an MP3 file and free to download from a specially created web site www.watf.co.uk.
The key to any football anthem is that it is written to be sung on the terraces and ‘We Are The Fans’ not only does that: the song is also sung from the fans point of view – a first in World Cup football songs.
Importantly, too, the song is not a gimmick. It is a quality recording and is available in various mixes, including a ‘club mix’ for those who want to dance along as well. ‘We Are The Fan’s can also be ordered on CD.
“England can come away winners and so will the fans. The right song is all part of the spirit of World Cup matches – the players will want to hear us from the stands. Embrace’s unsingable song just doesn’t cut the mustard,” concluded Zak and Striker, the boys behind the song.

French based pixel site emulates Alex Tew
A French-British partnership has created what may be the first worldwide pixel advertising page specifically for French products – and certainly the first dedicated to the region of Alsace Lorraine.
Jenkins Well Marketing have launched www.AlsaceatYourDoor.com with the aim of creating a one-stop-shop for the rich mixture of gastronomy, culture, travel, leisure and commerce in Alsace Lorraine, to both a local audience and internationally. Corinne Baudon and Stephanie Hayman created the site after following the success of Alex Tew’s Million Dollar Homepage.
They loved the visual emphasis of the site and the simplicity of the model. They also recognised the potential to develop the idea for a niche market. Deciding to capitalise on their English-French partnership, they chose Alsace Lorraine as a region of France less well known as a holiday destination but with so much to offer the visitor and deserving wider international promotion.
The site is fully bi-lingual, with everything from the sign-up process to Corinne and Stephanie’s blog presented in French and English. Advertisers are offered a free translation of their promotional text if unable to provide it themselves.
Corinne and Stephanie believe the site will appeal to advertisers and consumers alike for its simplicity and element of fun. They describe their vision of the site as an “Aladdin’s Cave” of Alsace riches, which the viewer can scan for interesting links, or take pot luck with a click straight to an Alsace site. For advertisers, the site offers an inexpensive way to advertise to millions of potential customers with an interest in the region.

Autism. Help them speak out
Autism Awareness Ribbons were presented to the England Captain Freddie Flintoff and Sri Lanka's captain Mahela Jayawardene during the First Test at Lords Cricket Grounds in St.John's Wood, London.
The autism ribbons were handed over at Lords by Ivan Corea, founder of the Autism Awareness Campaign UK and Sri Lanka on Sunday 14th February 2006. Sri Lanka's captain scored a memorable century at Lords on Sunday bringing dignity back to the Sri Lankan side.
Autism ribbons were also handed over to distinguished English cricketing personalities Jonathan Agnew and Henry Bloefeld. Writing to both Freddie Flintoff and Mahela Jayawardene, Ivan Corea urged the cricketing community to "speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves."
Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder that affects 535,000 people in the United Kingdom and 38,000 people with autism in Sri Lanka. Many struggle without access to public services in education, health, specialist speech therapy and respite care.
There are only two schools who can offer only a few places for children with autism in Sri Lanka. The vast majority have no access to education, many are kept at home due to reasons of culture. Ivan Corea has commended the efforts of the 'king of Baila' the London based Sri Lankan superstar, Desmond de Silva who hopes to embark upon a massive fund raising effort to build the first school for autism in Colombo.
Desmond de Silva in his first concert for Autism Sri Lanka performed to a packed centre in Sydney Australia earlier this year. He plans to launch a roadshow covering several countries in his efforts to reach out to children with autism in Sri Lanka and raise funds for the new school. Visit Kangeroo Island, Australia
Do you have the inclination to get off the beaten track in Australia? Consider Kangaroo Island, a short flight from Adelaide or a 15 minute ferry ride from Cape Jervis.
Kangeroo Island was inhabited by Aboriginal people as early as 16,000 years ago. Early European settlers arrived in the beginning of the 19th century.
Most of the animals seen today were introduced from the mainland in the early 1900s. There are numerous National Parks. These allow their descendants to live undisturbed in their natural habitats.
Each season has its own charms. Winter lasts from June to August and is the best time to see some of the normally nocturnal animals who come out by day during this season. The koala babies (called joeys) come out of their mothers’ pouches and ride on their backs.
The Southern Right whales are seen off shore on their migration from Antarctica. In spring, September to November, the countryside is rife with wildflowers.
Sea lions give birth in spring after a 18 month breeding cycle. In summer, December to February downunder, kangaroos, wallabies and koalas give birth.
This time of year, they are most often seen at dawn or dusk. During the day, they most often retreat to the bushland to avoid the heat.
Though it is relatively easy to drive around Kangaroo Island on ones own, it is almost impossible to find the animals without prior knowledge of their hideouts. Knowledgeable guides are available who can ferret out the animals and helped one to see such sights as koalas asleep in the crook of tree branches.
The koalas blend in to the forest so that they are almost invisible to the casual sightseer. The guides also are known for cooking a great lunch on the barbe.A highlight on Kangaroo is the Seal Bay Conservation Park.
There one will see hundreds of Australian sea-lions sunning themselves on the beach. You are permitted to walk within 10 feet of these magnificent creatures.
The activities available on Kangaroo Island include fishing, sailing, scuba diving, and surfing. Visitors can also go cycling and bushwalking. Though many people fly to Kangaroo Island in the morning and return to Adelaide the same evening, it is thought to be most rewarding to stay for a few days.
Accommodations include motel style hotels, guest houses, B and Bs and farm stays. Overnight stays will allow the visitor to take a nocturnal tour and allow one to see the animals rarely seen during the day. Also, it will be possible to explore the Island in more depth.
On this Island, just off the coast of South Australia, beside seeing the fauna of Australia, one canl enjoy meeting people from all over the world. A visitor will be rewarded with a slice of rural life far removed from the bustling cities of Australia.

Are you wasting it?
A survey of over 1000 small businesses across the UK by The Small Business Marketing Association revealed that 63% of small businesses questioned made no extra sales as a direct result of their marketing.
Conducted across a number of vertical markets, the research showed that whilst businesses were spending money on marketing their business, many made no extra sales as a result.
Clearly the massive expenditure by small businesses in marketing needs to be effective to ensure the survival of their business. The survey asked small business owner/mangers a series of questions that covered all aspects of their business and how they intended to grow their business in the coming twelve months.
Many had no real plan as to how they would grow their business and were relying heavily on newspaper and yellow pages advertising to increase their business. Over 87% had a website but a staggering 92% have yet to make back thier investment in the website they had designed and built to promote their business globally. T
he biggest area of concern was finding accurate, reliable and proven marketing knowledge that small business owners could directly implement in their business that would have an immeadiate effect on sales.
John Sayer, president of The Small Business Marketing Association, who conducted the survey said "It's clear that we need to look at giving business owners a clear, proven path to increase their sales. Many are confused by the number of methods to market their business and discover that many are not effective unless supported by some basic marketing foundations. This needs to change to ensure small businesses across the UK can survive and prosper in the coming twelve months."
For additional information, contact John Sayer - 08450 522479 The Small Business Marketing Assocation survey reveals that many small businesses aren ot making any additional sales as a result of ineffective marketing. Many are confused and are seeking proven advice and are relying too heavily on one or two methods to market their business.

Alan Sugar's latest business venture claim? "He got that wrong, sweetie!"
The announcement of Sir Alan Sugar’s new business venture - to be spearheaded by Michelle Dewbury, winner of BBC2’s The Apprentice - has been greeted with surprise by the boss of an Essex company.
On BBC TV’s Breakfast show Sir Alan revealed his intention to launch an IT equipment recycling company. Describing the venture in the interview Sir Alan said: “This is
something that has never, ever existed.”
His comments surprised Jan Smith, Managing Director and founder of End-O-Line Services (EOLS), who said: “Sir Alan is to be congratulated for highlighting the need for IT asset recycling but I felt his comments needed some clarification.
“IT equipment recycling is not something new. We are one of the most successful companies in this sector and we are just about to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Our clients include many top UK and global companies.”
Jan has won several business awards and only two weeks ago appeared in the Business Section of the Sunday Times which focused on her entrepreneurial aptitude in IT recycling. She started her business with £10 and worked at her kitchen table.
Clients use EOLS’ asset disposal services to dispose of IT equipment in an environmentally friendly way in advance of the imminent Waste, Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. When the Directive comes into force all businesses will be legally bound to dispose of IT equipment in a way that minimises the impact on the environment.
EOLS, based at Station Road, Maldon, operates a zero landfill policy for the IT equipment it handles. After all data is erased, 50 per cent of the computer equipment is resold, 40 per cent is given a new lease of life as components and the remaining 10 per cent is passed to other recycling companies who also use it in an environmentally-responsible way. Visit www.end-o-line.co.uk for more details.
(ED: That's what we like to see! A full-researched business idea! What will Sir Alan do for being so poorly informed? Fire himself? Probably not... There are also several other firms offering this type of service, so Sir Alan Sugar's claims weren't even close to the true situation. Never mind, hey?)

Keep an Open Mind on learning
Open Mind, the specialist distributor of learning resources, is suggesting two ways of celebrating ‘Learning At Work Day’ on 25th May.
Alun Harvey, Open Mind’s managing director, commented: “Having access to over 10,000 learning resources in all forms of delivery media – from ‘hi-tech’ online, DVD and CD-ROM programmes, through the ‘traditional’ video programmes to books and audio tapes to games and ice-breaking activities – we would recommend organisations giving their staff some Management Pocketbooks or, perhaps, a ‘Fit for Work’ bundle of learning products.
“Management Pocketbooks are always popular in learning centres or as course handouts – and there are two new titles available: on virtual teams and teambuilding,” said Harvey, whose organisation is offering all 85 titles in the Management Pocketbooks series for £599 – a saving of £76 on the retail price – or any book in the series at £5.99, a saving of £1 per book.
The Fit for Work bundle from Open Mind comprises an Essential Learning DVD ‘Fit For Work’ containing tips on maintaining mental and physical health including giving up smoking; a Training Guide (normally £399); a three-CD compilation of Mood Music specially compiled for use in training, plus ten copies each of three books – ‘The One Minute Manager Balances Work and Life’, ‘Peace of Mind is a Piece of Cake’, and ‘301 More Ways to Have Fun At Work’. The total retail value of this bundle is £704 but Open Mind’s price is just £599.
“Learning is a vital skill for everyone,” said Harvey. “Naturally, we’re anxious to encourage learning but we also want to make it a ‘fun’ activity – so we’re happy to discuss resourcing any other learning activities that organisations may have in mind.”
For further details of all the learning resources available via Open Mind, contact Alun Harvey at Open Mind on 01491 411061 or alun@openmind-learning.co.uk or visit www.openmind-learning.co.uk

Does your website service give you a 'host' of problems?
Web Hosting Information, a provider of hosting information, news and reviews, has found that after the institution of their In Your Corner service, shady business practices are still common in the web hosting industry.
The free service is provided to web hosting customers who feel they have been ripped off by hosting companies and domain name registration services.
“Over the past few months since we started this service, we have been inundated with hosting customers seeking assistance. Time and time again, hosting companies simply ignore their customer, seemingly hoping they’ll just go away.
"In fact, out of all of the hosting companies we have dealt with to resolve customer disputes, only one, Serverway, was upfront, honest and receptive,” states Casey, the host of Web Hosting Information’s weekly Podcast.
Web Hosting Information will continue to provide this free service to any hosting customers who feel that they have not gotten fair treatment from their web hosting companies. All it takes to log a hosting company complaint is a quick email, or a submission on the website and the staff at Web Hosting Information will immediately go to work to resolve the dispute.
“While many times, disputes may be a simple case of miscommunication between the customer and the hosting company, the fact remains that some hosting companies continue use deplorable business practices.
"We are committed to assisting customers in getting their money’s worth when it comes to web hosting and will continue to stand up for the little guy,” continued Casey.

The Messaging Centre (TMC) has been designed to benefit healthcare and pharmaceutical industries by providing a corporate text messaging service that can dramatically improve business operations, communications and provide enhanced aftercare for Outpatients.

Text message
based reminder systems are particularly useful for this sector because the demographic profiles of persistent DNAs and mobile phone users are very similar.”

New history and archaeology tour planned
Due to unprecedented demand, Peter Sommer Travels has the pleasure of announcing dates for its 2007 Alexander the Great escorted tour.
The tour will be personally led by Peter Sommer, who in 1994 walked 2,000 miles across Turkey, from Troy to the site of the battle of Issus, retracing Alexander’s route.
A British archaeologist and TV Producer/Director, Peter has worked on many acclaimed documentaries for British and American television, including In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great (BBC/PBS), Commanding Heights: the battle for the world economy (BBC/PBS) and most recently Tales from the Green Valley (BBC).
“My 2,000 mile walk retracing Alexander the Great’s footsteps was the start of an enduring love affair with Turkey, its history, its breathtaking landscapes, and above all its warm and hospitable people.” says Peter Sommer.
“Our new escorted Alexander tour will visit some of the greatest ancient cities in the world on the trail of one of the world’s most extraordinary heroic figures. It’s a unique, once in a lifetime holiday.”
Starting in Istanbul we pay homage at the Alexander sarcophagus in the Archaeological Museum. Then we set out on an exceptional journey discovering the history, architecture, and personalities of the cities along his route.
Troy, where Alexander ran naked around Achilles’ tomb. Ephesus, one of the best preserved classical cities in the world. Termessus, a rocky eyrie that said ‘no’ to Alexander and got away with it. You'll stroll along the sacred way to Apollo’s temple at Didyma, stand on Alexander’s hill at Sagalassos, from which he launched a bloody siege, and sail along Lycia’s timeless coast.
This inspirational tour is a tale of romance, war and power, an amazing expedition full of unforgettable vistas and historical highlights in the shadow of a king and warrior who still excites the imagination 2,300 years after his death.
“For more than 2,000 years Alexander the Great has excited the imagination of people around the globe.” says Peter Sommer.
“This was a man who inspired 45,000 soldiers to march for 12 years, beyond the known ends of the earth. He led them for some 22,000 miles, from Greece all the way to Afghanistan and on to India.
By the time he died in Babylon at the age of just 32 in 323 BC, much of the known world lay at his feet. Who could not be intrigued and fascinated by such a figure?”
Info: 19 days - £2,999/$5,495. Price includes full board accommodation and all travel except flights. Arrival point in Turkey is Istanbul airport and departure point is Adana airport. Scheduled flights on Turkish Airlines can be arranged through their affiliated flight specialists. Maximum group size is 16.

Wines of Alsace in London
The wines of Alsace (the Eastern French region that borders Germany) are famous across the world for their quality, their individuality and the distinctive slim bottles used by Alsace wine growers.
Seven varieties of grapes (cépages) are grown in the region — Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Muscat d’Alsace, Tokay Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer. Unlike most other French wines, Alsace wines tend to be varietals, which means that they derive their name from the grape variety they are made from, rather than being blends named after a given terroir (i.e. the physical and environmental characteristics of the vineyard, especially the soil of the area concerned).
Winemakers in Alsace still take great care to marry grape varieties with local soil types to produce the ideal match. There are three Appellations d’Origine Contrôlées in the region (AOCs, i.e. a certification that the product is made in a certain region and meets strict production criteria) — AOC Alsace, AOC Alsace Grand Cru and AOC Crémant d’Alsace (‘crémant’ being a sparkling wine).
The wines of Alsace are ideal when enjoyed with food, as they complement perfectly a wide variety of dishes. However, Alsace wines can also be enjoyed for themselves, as an aperitif for instance, and the remarkable range of flavours as well as the bouquet that they have to offer will come as a most pleasant surprise to British consumers who may — for some of them at any rate — be used to blander and mass-produced types of white wine.
Indeed, quality, traditional Alsace wines have sometimes been unfairly overlooked in the UK in favour of more heavily marketed New World wines. The wines of Alsace range from light and dry to opulent and rich, and the Wine Show will give visitors the perfect opportunity to discover more about the region and its vineyards.
All the producers on the Alsace stand at the London Wine Show are independent, family-run businesses, which place a premium on the respect for the environment, avoiding the use of chemicals (including pesticides and fertilisers) in favour of traditional and more ‘natural’ techniques developed over centuries of production in the region.
The renowned Alsace Wine Route runs for more than 170 kilometres along the Vosges mountain range, taking in areas of great beauty along the way. It is easy to follow and visitors can explore the many vineyards that line the scenic route as well as the traditional ‘winstubs’ and wine-storage cellars (where wine-tasting is on offer).
For those who are unable to visit Alsace itself, going to the Wine Show in London will give them the opportunity to discover one of France’s most distinctive regions, through its amazing range of authentic and traditionally produced wines. Domaine René Fleith-Eschard is unsurpassed in noble rot Based in Ingersheim for 11 generations, this family-run 9.2-hectare vineyard produces roughly 60,000 bottles of wine a year.
The vineyard is particularly celebrated for its Gewurztraminer and Riesling, not to mention its Grand Cru Furstentum Tokay Pinot Gris. The family also produces rich Sélection de Grains Nobles wines, concentrated by the development of the so-called ‘noble rot’.
The family places great emphasis on quality as well as the expression of the different terroirs. This means that yields are deliberately reduced, and neither chemical fertilisers nor chemical pesticides are used.
Domaine Jean-Claude Gueth is a successful family affair
The Gueth vineyard is in the village of Gueberschwihr, where Jean-Claude and Bernadette Gueth, along with their daughter Muriel, manage a site of 7.5 hectares. The vineyard produces wines from all seven of Alsace’s grape varieties, and its reputation is based on its Gewurztraminer and Pinot Blanc.
The women of the family play an important part in the business, not only running the office but also the vineyards and the wine cellar.
For further information, please go to: http://www.vin-alsace-gueth.com Domaine Jean-Marie Haag – quality and novelty expressing the richness of the terroir Thirteen miles to the south of the city of Colmar, outside the village of Soultzmatt, lies the Haag family vineyard — a family that has been in wine-making for three generations.
Husband-and-wife team Jean-Marie and Myriam Haag have worked together since 1982, producing a rich and diverse collection of 20 different vintages, each a unique expression of its terroir.
Almost a third of the grapes grown at the site are Gewurztraminer, which go towards making the Grand Cru Zinnkoepfle, along with Pinot Gris and Riesling. Jean-Marie Haag is currently experimenting with biodynamics and Myriam has just created her first 2005 vintage wine — an elegant and striking assemblage of flavours and aromas that deserves to be discovered.
Domaine Paul Kubler – producing wine since 1620 The Kubler family has been producing wine since 1620. In 1947, Camille Kubler began to develop the Soultzmatt site and his grandson Philippe is now in charge, having trained at Cloudy Bay in New Zealand and obtained a Diploma in Oenology from the University of Bordeaux.
The vines are 30 years old on average, and vine density ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 vines per hectare. The family uses traditional techniques, such as the use of oak casks to ferment the grapes over a period of eight to ten months. Domaine Paul Kubler specialises in dry white wines, especially the Grand Cru Zinnkoepfle, made from Riesling or Gewurztraminer . For further information, please go to: http://www.lesvins.com/entree/Viticulteurs/Kubler_Paul.html
Domaine Gérard Neumeyer’s vineyard features Grand Cru Bruderthal The vineyard, in the Molsheim area, covers 16 hectares, and includes part of one of Alsace’s most renowned Grand Crus — the Grand Cru Bruderthal, made from either Riesling, Gewurztraminer or Tokay Pinot Gris. The wines produced by Gérard and his wife Gabrielle are served in many Michelin-starred restaurants and have also won numerous awards in their own right.
All the grapes are harvested by hand and the Neumeyer family uses traditional vinification techniques. They take particular care to match the grape varieties to the soil type, while placing special emphasis on the respect for the environment throughout the cultivation process. For further information, please go to: http://www.domaine-neumeyer-gerard.com/
Domaine Philippe Schaeffer, going strong after over 250 years in business The Schaeffer family have been winegrowers since 1750. Set in the largest of the Alsatian wine villages, the estate currently produces up to 96,000 bottles a year — more particularly the renowned Klevener de Heiligenstein (made from a rare grape), the Crus Fronholz, and the Hertenstein.
In order to guarantee optimal quality, eight types of grape are planted on twelve hectares of land, a prime concern being the respect for the environment and for the soils concerned. Whether dry or fruity, and be they white, rosé or red wines, Crémants d’Alsace, Vendanges Tardives and Sélections de Grains Nobles are elaborated according to stringent winemaking rules that combine traditional know-how with a desire to innovate. Domaine Henri Schoenheitz creates wines full of passion This 13-hectare family estate is located in Wihr-au-Val, on the steep slopes of the Munster Valley. Renown and famous since the Middle Ages, the vineyard was badly damaged by successive wars that affected the border region of Alsace, to the point where it was nearly destroyed. Dominique and Henri have continued the reconstruction begun by Henri Schoenheitz Senior in the 1970s.
Their hard work and passion for wine-making have successfully restored the reputation of the Wihr-au-Val vineyard, earning them the title of Best Vintner in 1995. Henri and his wife create high-quality wines from granite soils, sticking to proven production methods that respect the environment.
Their wines bear the hallmarks of the honesty, purity, elegance and character that go into their production — especially as far as the Riesling and the Gewurztraminer wines are concerned.
Domaine Jean Huttard trims its wines to perfection Domaine Jean Huttard prides itself on producing wines that are adapted to each and every situation and that can be appropriate for every consumer — whether an occasional wine drinker or a seasoned lover of fine wines. Thanks to the variety of wines offered by Domaine Jean Huttard, the heart and the palate of the wine drinker will find delight in their consumption. Jean Huttard’s credo is that the wine and the environment are closely interdependent, just as the ecosystem of a region and its ancient traditions can be.
The quality of a producer’s output does not depend solely on the soil, but also on many other factors, especially a consistent and expert trimming of the vines. With a ratio of 50 to 60 litres of wine produced per are (a hectare being 10,000 square metres and an are representing 100 square metres), Domaine Jean Huttard provides optimal conditions in order to obtain excellent wines.
Domaine Laurent Vogt, where respect for the environment chimes with outstanding quality This 11-hectare estate is located in Wolxheim, a small village near Strasbourg. Riesling wine produced locally is particularly famous, as the area of Wolxheim offers an especially good terroir for this noble grape variety.
The whole range of Alsace wines is available in the selection offered by the Vogt family; however, particular wines stand out, such as the Vogts’ Riesling Grand Cru Altenberg de Wolxheim and their Crémant Chardonnay.
Most of the Vogt estate’s wines have been awarded prizes, and are mentioned in the Hachette Wine Guide and in the specialist press. Thomas Vogt (whose family has worked the estate for three generations) grows his wines according to environmentally friendly principles of viticulture, giving preference to prevention rather than cure.
Thomas exercises great care in the way that he runs the family’s vineyard and that his wines are produced, so that his customers may enjoy complete satisfaction. Domaine Sick-Dreyer — a precursor in quality wines since the 17th century The Sick-Dreyer estate has a long and prestigious history, since wine production started there in the 17th century. Located 8 km North of Colmar, at the heart of the wine-producing region of Alsace, the Domaine owns 13 hectares of vines, mainly located in Ammerschwihr.
The wines of Domain Sick-Dreyer are solely grown and bottled at the winery itself, in conformity with strict and proven production methods. The estate produces wines from all varieties of Alsace grapes, and one of its wines — the Kaefferkopf — enjoys the oldest quality-certification label (or appellation) in the whole of Alsace.
Domaine du Moulin: 20 hectares at the heart of the Alsace Wine Route Born into a family where the wine-growing tradition is handed down from generation to generation, Bernard Schwach created the Domaine du Moulin du Dusenbach, an independently owned estate that is located in the very heart of the Alsace wine-growing region, at Ribeauvillé. Over 20 hectares belong to the estate, which stretches from north to south and takes in among the most famous villages of the Alsace Wine Route.
Thus, the Domaine du Moulin is a kaleidoscope of soils and terroirs, thanks to the very complex geology of Alsace — Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé, Ammerschwihr, Bergheim, Hunawihr, Kientzheim, Kaysersberg, and Zellenberg. Unsurprisingly, all the various Alsace wines are produced on the estate, from ‘reserve’ and ‘late harvest’ to ‘noble-rot’ wines, and also Crémant. Grand Crus such as Sporen and Schoenenbourg (in Riquewihr), Schlossberg (in Kientzheim), and Kaefferkopf (in Ammerschwihr) are naturally included in the Domaine du Moulin.
While combining traditional techniques with present-day know-how, Bernard Schwach concentrates on quality and the expression of his different terroirs to produce outstanding dry white wines.
Many awards have been won by his wines — among them the Silver Medal at the last international Riesling contest, for the Grand Cru Sporen 2004. Domaine des Chartreux — internationally acquired expertise to better promote excellence Domaine des Chartreux extends across an essentially chalky-clay terroir with plots of land situated in the districts of Rosheim and Bischoffsheim.
The Domaine’s priority, explains Christophe Maetz, is to preserve the vine's natural balance, together with the spirit and inspiration lying at the heart of the wine’s production. The vines of the Domaine des Chartreux are all situated on hillsides to benefit from favourable climatic conditions.
The wines produced would not be possible without Christophe Maetz’s passion for wine-making, and his production benefits from his dual expertise as an engineer and a winemaker. His many years of experience in the wine industry — in France, but also in China and in the USA — are invaluable assets for Domaine des Chartreux.
The wines grown on the estate are of an exceptional quality and have been described as “voluptuous”. Christophe Maetz sees the Domaine’s wine as “a work of art”, elaborated in line with clear values of distinction, excellence, and quality, in the respect for the terroir's integrity as well as for consumers.

How to get what you want for your adventure holiday
The farther you go want to go off the beaten path, the harder it is to find what you need: somebody to take you there; unique lodging (the climbing hut), specialised transportation, fellow adventurers; maps; gear; time; and find it all at a reasonable cost.
Now though, independent guides and services for your adventure are at your fingertips. www.AdventureTaxi.com provides a venue for adventurers to connect like never before. The site appeals to outdoor adventure-tour operators, guides, instructors, product sellers, and advertisers because it connects them directly to their target demographic: interested adventurers.
Even with the growth of huge adventure tour companies in the last decade, there are still thousands of independent guides world wide without their own websites—guides at the top of their craft, often with more extensive local knowledge than the big companies, but no desire or money to manage a full featured website or pay the expensive listings on the bigger adventure websites.
AdventureTaxi.com makes it so any guide can create their own listings in less than an hour, and pay only small listing and final value fees. Likewise, AdventureTaxi appeals to consumers—clients, customers, trip partners, and travelers—because they can find unique adventure trips and services, travel partners, information, and local products like guide books and maps all in one place.
Consumers have an indication of trust. Yes, trust; AdventureTaxi.com provides a client-feedback mechanism so you can give public feedback and see an entire guide’s client-satisfaction history. AdventureTaxi.com is an efficient online community.
Company President Don Bartlett got the idea in the mid 1990s when he was planning a trip to climb 18,700’ El Pico de Orizaba in Mexico. He lived in the desert so it took months to find partners with the right time, experience, and money.
He found a guide listed in the guide book he mail ordered, set up reservations for lodging and transportation to the hut by fax and phone, and sent a cheque he figured he may never see again.
The service and lodging turned out to be a great part of the adventure. "If there had been one comprehensive resource like AdventureTaxi.com to find unique places and services, Don could have saved a lot of time and worry, and he could have found many more adventure options. At AdventureTaxi.com, we’re creating the community that connects adventurers throughout the world. To learn more about AdventureTaxi, go to www.adventuretaxi.com," said a spokesman.
